One UH student dead after being hit by suspected drunken driver, police say

HOUSTON – A University of Houston student died on Saturday after he and another student were hit by a Ford F-350 pickup truck on Friday.

Police said the students were walking along the 5000 block of Calhoun near North Macgregor Way when they were hit.

The driver of the truck, Marshall Patrick Schoen, 23, was trying to avoid a wrong-way driver making a left turn, but hit it anyway, investigators said. The crash caused the truck to skid onto the sidewalk and hit the students.

The other student was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK.

Police suspected Schoen may have been drunk at the time of the crash. He was arrested and later charged with intoxicated assault with a vehicle. He is being held in the Harris County Jail in lieu of  $30,000 bail.
