CHAMBERS COUNTY, Texas - A 5-year-old boy and his 7-year-old sister have died, as a result of an ATV accident in Chambers County.

Sam McCawley and his sister, Mercy McCawley, were visiting relatives from Jacksonville, North Carolina. Thursday afternoon they went for an ATV ride with three of their cousins and a friend. All six people on board were between the ages of five and 16.

The ATV flipped over, throwing all six to the ground and pinning the McCawley siblings under the ATV.

Sam McCawley died at the scene. Mercy McCawley died at the hospital Friday morning.

Sheriff Brian Hawthorne said the ATV was meant to seat four to six people. All six were not wearing their safety belts.

"These were good kids, they came from a good family and this is just a tragic accident," Hawthorne said.

Hawthorne said speed may have played a factor in the crash, along with the terrain and possibly the inexperience of the driver. The Chambers County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. This is the second fatal ATV incident involving a minor in Chambers County in June.
