Transgender bathroom policy ignites protest at Heights-area Target

HOUSTON – The hotly debated battle over the bathroom, and who can use it, erupted again in Houston Sunday night in front of a Target store in the Heights.

The issue? Target's decision to allow transgender individuals to use whichever bathroom they feel most comfortable using.

"The city of Houston has made it crystal clear, without a shadow of a doubt, that we are serious -- not curious about men going into our restrooms with our women and children," Tex Christopher, protest organizer, said.

Organizers are calling upon all Houstonians to boycott Target for its position.

Tracy Shannon brought her children to join the protest.

"Rape or molestation is a crime of opportunity and this just makes more opportunity for someone who would do harm to women and children," Shannon said.

On the other side of this argument? Members of the gay, lesbian and transgender community shouted their support of Target's bathroom policy.

"We think they should be able to use the bathroom that they identify with. Target has taken a courageous stance and one we think is fair too," Kenny Jones said.

Jones was not alone in his support for the policy.

"I support it. I think it's important what's happening, even if you're not changing your policy it's important to state we really want you and except you," said Ben Franklin.
