Thieves target senior citizens' apartment complex

HOUSTON - Senior citizens living in a northeast Houston complex are leaving in fear after some residents were targeted by thieves.

Binnie Savage said he was ambushed by robbers at the Commons of Grace Senior Apartments in the 9100 block of Tidwell.

"It took me by surprise," Savage said. "I looked at him and saw the pistol. When I turned around, from the other side, the guy come over from the other corner and bust me in the face."

Savage said he was bleeding and had just $20 in his wallet. He said he begged his attackers to leave him alone, but they took his money and ran.

The attackers may have gotten into the complex through a broken gate.

Resident Marilyn Binoe said burglars have broken into cars at the complex, too.

"Last week they broke open my neighbor's car," she said.

She said thieves have also broken into an apartment and even the management office. She said TVs, computers and maybe even keys were taken.

Resident Lorena Littlejohn said she's worried about her safety.

"I worry about if they're going to jump on me when I'm in here," she said.

Property managers said they're taking steps to make sure residents are safe. They're working to change the locks on everyone's doors and they're adding daily security guards.
