Thieves target packages on front porches in Spring Branch neighborhood

SPRING BRANCH, Texas – Residents of the Spring Branch neighborhood were on alert Saturday, amid a rash of package thefts that occurred in broad daylight.

"The (blind) shades were down and they were coming up to the door through the walkway," Leslie Lerner said.

Lerner said one of the men rang her doorbell.

"I heard people speaking outside and then I saw a car outside and they weren't leaving. So I kind of waited," she said.

Lerner said she waited and watched as a group of five men surrounded her house Monday. Lerner counted three men at her front door and another man at her back door.

"They sped off after they saw my shadow," Lerner said, adding the men took off in a minivan.

The group did not steal anything, she said.

However, surveillance video recorded similar situations at Lerner's neighbors' homes. One video shows a man ringing a doorbell before taking off with a package.

"You just really have to watch your surroundings. I'm keeping more lights on at night. I'm making sure my blinds are down at night, which I didn't before," Lerner said, describing the precautions she has taken.

Harris County Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen told KPRC2 his office is investigating the thefts.
