Thief steals purse, Christmas gift money

HOUSTON - A Houston mom said she turned her back for only a minute while running inside to pick her son up from school, when she came out she said someone had gone into her car and stole her purse.

"This is the first time this has happened to me, ever," said Janil Trahan.

The single mom with three kids said she had almost $400 in her purse, money she had been saving and setting aside for Christmas gifts. Now, it's all gone.

"Within 60 seconds everything was gone, my phone, my purse," she said.

Trahan admits she left her purse inside her car and the door unlocked, but thought she'd be safe because she was only gone for a minute. She said what upsets her even more is she's not the first victim.

There were four other police reports filed that same day for motor vehicle break-ins. Some of the cars were unlocked, like Trahan's, but not all of them.

The crimes happened in 3100 block of Cleburne Street in the Third Ward near Texas Southern University. Trahan's son goes to school on campus.

University officials did not return KPRC Local 2's phone calls, but Trahan is hoping that the police are investigating and that this crook is caught before he gets his hands on someone else's car.

"I'm glad we weren't hurt," she said. "But I still can't get over the fact that my kid's Christmas is gone that quick."
