Thief crashes into store for ATM

Burglary alarm scared suspect

HOUSTON – A thief targeting an ATM smashed a pickup truck through a northeast Houston store, but did not get want he wanted Tuesday.

The crime occurred at a check-cashing store on Airline Drive and Little York Road shortly before 5 a.m. According to police, alarms sounded when the driver crashed into the store.

The manager of the store said the money is emptied from the ATM machine every night. Police said it appears the suspect was scared by the alarms and did not get away with anything.

"It's going to cost more to fix it than what they could have gotten. We always practice great security. We empty the ATM at night so there's no point in trying to do this senseless crime when there's no opportunity to get money," the manager said.

Witnesses told police the man fled in a white Ford F-150. A description was not immediately provided.

The store has a surveillance camera. Investigators hope video will lead to a suspect.
