Woman killed walking across Katy Freeway

HOUSTON – A woman was hit and killed Friday while she tried to walk across four lanes of the Katy Freeway, police said.

Investigators said the woman was struck by a vehicle around 2:10 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the 18500 block of Interstate 10 at Barker Cypress.

"This is a busy freeway -- four lanes of main traffic and that includes the other lane, which would be the HOV lane. She stepped directly out into the freeway with oncoming traffic," said Sgt. Cedric Nickerson with the Houston Police Department. "The driver of the vehicle stopped and called 911, but the victim was deceased at the scene."

Officials said the woman did not carry any identification, so she has not yet been identified.

All lanes were shut down until 4:40 a.m. Friday while crews investigated.

Police do not know why the woman decided to cross the freeway.

The driver will not be charged because he stopped and waited for officers to arrive. Investigators determined alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
