Woman drowns in Galveston

Investigators think the woman had been drinking before swimming

GALVESTON – A 49-year-old Houston woman drowned in Galveston early Sunday morning after a night out at a restaurant on the seawall.

Galveston Island Beach Patrol officials said four people had been out, reportedly drinking, when they decided to go swimming on 32nd and Sand at about 3:20 a.m.

Two of the swimmers came back ashore, but the other two drifted near the 33rd Street jetty. One of the swimmers was able to get out of the water and climb onto the jetty.

The other swimmer, Jutina Silbery, didn't make it out of the water. The beach patrol believes she was swept up in a rip current and drowned.

Silbery's body was found by a family at 10:50 a.m.
