Vehicles destroyed in garage fire at fmr. Manvel mayor's house

MANVEL - Volunteer firefighters responded to a house fire in Manvel Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out in the attached garage around 7:30 a.m. in the 5400 block of Patterson Road.

Sky 2 showed two vehicles outside of the home engulfed in flames. Nearby electrical wires could be seen sparking and a few tree limbs also caught fire.

The homeowner told Local 2 that neighbors alerted him and his wife about the fire in his garage by knocking on their door.

The homeowner is former Manvel Mayor Merle Bradley.

"The guy was at the door, he said, 'Get your clothes on and get out.'" said Bradley.

The fire spread to two vehicles that were parked nearby.

"We don't have hydrants in the area. We used our tank water to keep the fire off the house and we were successful in doing that," said Delbert Burleson of the Manvel Fire Department.

Bradly said he and his wife have lived in the house for 45 years. He believes the fire was caused by an electrical issue.

No injuries were reported.

Officials said firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading to the house.

"When we moved out here 45 years ago, we had just the house and now we're back to that.  Things can be replaced. We're okay," said Judy Bradley, wife of the former mayor.

Fire investigators are working to determine the exact cause of fire.  Damage is estimated to be around $200,000.
