UPDATE: SWAT situation ends in northwest Houston

HPD: A man has barricaded himself in an apartment

HOUSTON - A SWAT situation ended Tuesday morning after a man barricaded himself inside a northwest Houston apartment complex.

Houston police and a SWAT team responded to the Avery Park Apartment complex, located in the 5300 block of W. Gulf Bank near Streamside.

Officials said it took about three hours to get the man to surrender, and at one point, he did have two women inside of that apartment that were held against their will.

Police said it all started around 7 a.m. when an Aldine ISD officer was at the apartment complex doing truancy checks. The officer was flagged down by someone who said he had been robbed.

Officials said the victim identified the suspect and after that, the suspect pointed a gun at the officer before barricading himself in an apartment.

Houston police officers and a SWAT team were called to the scene.

Eventually, the two women were released and the suspect came out of the apartment peacefully. Police said the man is facing a number of charges that include aggravated robbery, aggravated assault of a police officer and kidnapping.

West Gulf Bank Road was shut down and the entrance to the complex was closed off during the incident.

Local 2 spoke to one parent who said the SWAT situation prevented her child from getting on the school bus because she would normally be picked up right there in front of the apartment complex office.

The suspect's name was not immediately released.
