SUV hits pole, knocks out power to thousands

Power restored after several hours

HOUSTON – An SUV slammed into a power pole in the Galleria area, trapping the driver and knocking out power to thousands for hours.

Around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a woman was traveling eastbound on Woodway Drive at a high rate of speed when she lost control of the vehicle near Fountain View Drive and slammed into a wooden electrical pole, splitting it in half, officials said.

When police arrived at the scene, officers said they found an upside-down SUV with a woman trapped inside. They managed to free the driver, but the force of the crash into the pole knocked out power to more than 3,000 customers.

The electric company restored power to the affected area by 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

The woman was not injured in the crash, but she was arrested for a possible DWI.
