Suspected tree thief caught on camera

HOUSTON – A man creeping around town homes on Rosedale in Midtown, was not searching for fine jewelry or electronics. Instead a resident said the thief stole seven-foot cedar topiary trees from his porch and it was all caught on camera.

Bob Cavnar said he woke up Sunday morning to find the trees missing from his and his neighbor's front porch. "It really is frustrating," said Cavnar. "You know we spend a lot of time and a lot of expense to make this area nice."

Cavnar said he ran inside to check surveillance footage from his security system, to see what kind of person would commit such a crime.

He said he spotted not just a man, but also man's best friend. "His cover is walking his small dog," said Cavnar. "So he has a small dog who is an innocent accomplice."

In the footage, a man pretended to walk his dog, while casing several homes on the block. The man then pulled trees out of their pots and put them on the ground. He walked off and came back, still with his canine companion, and this time the man was also pulling a shopping cart to load up Cavnar's trees.

But the man was not done yet. Minutes later, he returned through the gate, waved to what could be someone else down the street, then grabbed Cavnar's neighbor's trees and left.

"Who could be bold enough, and arrogant enough , selfish enough to come into someone else's property and steal things that are worth hundred s if not thousands of dollars ," Cavnar said. "It's very, very frustrating ."
