Suspected car thief shot in northeast Houston

Police say neighbors chased suspects to gas station

HOUSTON – A suspected car thief is in the hospital after a wild chase in northeast Houston, police said.

Houston police were called to an Exxon station on Tidwell Road and Interstate 45.

Officials said they found a car that had crashed into a freeway pillar and a man with a gunshot wound.

Police said neighbors in a nearby neighborhood spotted the man stealing a black pickup truck. They followed the stolen truck to the gas station.

There was some sort of confrontation at the gas station. The suspected thief tried to get away with the help of a getaway driver. That's when police said someone shot the suspect.  He lost his grip on the getaway car and fell off.  The suspect was rushed to the hospital.

Police did not release his condition.

He and a woman were taken into custody.  A third suspect got away.

It was unclear who fired the gun.

Police were questioning everyone involved.
