State reduces Yale Street bridge load limit

HOUSTON – The state has reduced the load limit on the Yale Street bridge south of Interstate 10.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, the new limit is 3,000 pounds per single axle.

The previous limit was 8,000 pounds per single axle.

"A standard passenger car with two single axles and a maximum weight of 6,000 pounds (3,000 pounds x 2 axles) would meet the new limit, but certain pick-up trucks and sport utility vehicles may exceed the new limit," TxDOT said.

The load limit change is not because the bridge is unsafe, according to TxDOT.

"The Houston Police Department will continue to monitor traffic in the area to assure the load limits are enforced," TxDOT said.
