Spring ISD superintendent speaks with Local 2 about school stabbing

Dr. Ralph Draper discusses fatal stabbing and incident of knife on a bus

By Andy Cerota - Anchor/Reporter

SPRING, Texas - Less than 10 days after student Joshua Broussard was fatally stabbed in a gang fight at Spring High School, a sixth grade Twin Creeks Middle School student was caught with a knife on a school bus.

Students told a teacher at the bus ramp and nobody got hurt. The principal was in the process of alerting parents when Local 2's Andy Cerota sat down with Spring IDS Superintendent Dr. Ralph Draper for a candid one-on-one interview.

"This does not bode well for the community and every problem that exists in our community comes to school," Dr. Draper said.

Since the stabbing on September 4 that left Broussard, 17, dead and three other students injured, many parents in the district have been plagued by worries over racial tension and gang activity.

Friday morning's knife on the bus incident comes on the heels of tightened security measures at Spring High School that include the use of metal detectors. Draper says Friday's incident must re-ignite the conversation over what actions should be taken at other schools within Spring ISD to make them safer. He believes metal detectors are only part of the solution.

"That's why we're going to have to use multiple ways. The network worked today. Can Spring school or any school district solve this problem alone? No, sir," Draper said.

The student who officials say brought the knife on the bus is being disciplined.

Draper say the district will explore the possibility of using a metal detector at Twin Creeks even though the student never brought the knife into school.
