HOUSTON – The following southeast Houston schools will be closed Tuesday because of flooding from severe storms.
- KIPP PEACE Elementary School, 5400 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
- KIPP Liberation College Prep, 5400 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
- Peck Elementary School, 5139 Arvilla Lane (HISD)
High water Monday flooded the streets surrounding the schools.
Dozens of students were trapped in KIPP PEACE and KIPP Liberation until emergency crews used boats to get students to higher ground.
Some parents carried their children to safety.
Students rescued by firefighters were reunited with their parents hours after the school day ended.
"I know he was safe, but it's just the idea of him being stuck and not being able to get to him," said Bonetta Cullars, whose son, Jevon, was stuck inside the school. "As a mother, you always want to protect your kids."
Classes are expected to resume on Wednesday.
