Robbery leads to drug bust

David Mena charged with drug possession

HOUSTON - A complex turn of events lands a robbery victim in jail for drug possession, investigators said.

Harris County Precinct 4 deputy constables said David Mena was walking into his home off Laurel Rustic Oaks near T.C. Jester around 11 p.m. Tuesday when he was approached by three men demanding his cash.

"I was kind of shocked. I was up last night, looking out of the window and saw all of the cars and stuff. There were a lot of people out there," said Bert Opara, a neighbor.

Investigators said his nephew, who was inside the home, grabbed a gun and rushed to the door when he heard the commotion.

Officials said he fired a shot at the suspects, but ended up shooting Mena in the arm.

Mena was taken to the hospital. Deputy constables said they got suspicious when Mena refused to cooperate with them, so they sent investigators with drug-sniffing dogs to his home.

Investigators said inside his home they found $11,000 in cash, Xanax pills, Hydrocodone and two pounds of marijuana.

Deputy constables arrested Mena and charged him with drug possession and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Officials said Mena just got out of jail five months ago for not registering as a sex offender.

Deputies said they're still looking for the men who attempted to rob him. So far, no arrests have been made.
