HOUSTON - A restaurant manager was shot during a robbery in northeast Harris County early Friday.

Harris County sheriff's deputies said three gunmen held up the Denny's on Beltway 8 near Wilson Road about 1 a.m.

Detectives said the manager saw the men emptying the cash register when he walked out of the kitchen.

The manager fought one of the robbers to the floor, and another one of the robbers opened fire, investigators said.

"The manager grabbed a trash can and held it in front of him," Deputy Thomas Gilliand said. "The bullet went through the trash can, still went through a lower area, but essentially it saved his life."

The manager was taken to a hospital and was later released.

The suspects took about $100 and left in a getaway car.

A state trooper spotted the car and the driver took off again. The trooper chased the driver for about 8 miles before the driver lost control.

The suspects jumped out of the car and ran on foot. Raymond Edwards, 18, and a second suspect, a juvenile, were arrested.

A gun was found in the vehicle, deputies said.

The third suspect got away.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
