Rains, wind brings red dust from Mexico

HOUSTON – If you noticed your car was extra dirty Sunday morning, you weren't alone. Local 2's phone lines, Twitter and Facebook page were flooded with viewers asking about a mysterious rust-colored dust that blanketed cars and windshields.

The dust was seen throughout Houston and beyond and kept car detailing businesses busy.

The National Weather Service issued a weather statement Sunday afternoon explaining that the dust may have blown in from Mexico over the last couple of days.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality said the agency received one complaint about the dust and would investigate. However, the spokesperson said particulate values at stationary monitors in the Houston area were well below levels that would be expected to cause health or safety issues.
