HOUSTON - Houston police joined the search Thursday for an escaped suspect wearing handcuffs who got away from Veterans Affairs police.

The suspect was pulled over around 3 a.m. in a parking lot near the intersection of Old Spanish Trail and Almeda Road in the Texas Medical Center. The area is part of the Micheal E. Debakey VA Medical Center. VA police searched the man's car and found what is believed to be cocaine, officials said.

They handcuffed him and put him in the back of a squad car. Somehow, he managed to crawl out of an open window and escape, investigators said.

Veterans Affairs officers searched for the suspect for 40 minutes, then called Houston Police for help.

HPD K-9 Units searched the area, but did not pick up the suspect's scent.

The suspect's name was not released.
