Police chase ends in car fire, arrest

HOUSTON - Police arrested a driver after officers chased him through the Galleria area.

Houston police said they spotted a suspicious man sitting in his car at an apartment complex at 6100 Hillcroft Street about 4 a.m. on Friday.

The man tried to hide something when the officer approached him, officials said.

The officer asked the man to identify himself, but the man did not answer, detectives said.  Police said the man shoved the car into drive and sped off down Beechnut Street toward the West Loop.

The officer chased the man to San Felipe Street near Post Oak Park, where the driver entered the Amegy Bank Building parking structure.  The man then crashed through the security gate in the garage and drove up to the third floor, investigators said.

Detectives said the man got out of the car and jumped from the third floor to the ground.  Another HPD unit was pulling up to the garage at the time, and officers took the man into custody.  Emergency crews then took the driver to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police said car the man drove overheated and caught fire, which is why the driver tried to leave the car in the garage.

Officers determined that the car was stolen.  Detectives said they found several burglary tools inside the car.

The driver's name has not been released.
