Off-duty HPD officer fires at driver

HPD: Driver tried to hit officer with car

HOUSTON – A Houston police officer fired shots at a man who pointed a gun at and drove toward him, investigators said.

Houston police said two officers were working an approved extra job at Club Nox on Shepherd Drive near Nett Street early Wednesday.

Detectives said there someone was driving a car without headlights on. The officers stopped the car and questioned the two men inside. The men left, but the car showed up in the area about two hours later, but four men were inside the car, police said.

"One of the officers shone his flashlight on the front windshield," HPD spokesman Victor Senties said. "At that point, the suspect looked directly at the officer, made eye contact with him and raised his right hand. He had a pistol in his hand and pointed it toward the officer."

Investigators said the driver gunned the engine and drove straight toward the officer.

The officer fired several shots at the car, police said.

"We do know the vehicle was struck," Senties said.

The driver kept going, but the men eventually got out of the car and ran, police said. Officers brought a K9 unit in to search for the men, but they only captured one of them. He is expected to be charged with aggravated assault on a police officer..

The officers were put on paid administrative leave, standard procedure anytime an officer fires his weapon.
