HPD: Sleeping driver wakes, leads officers on high-speed chase

Investigators: Driver ended up crashing into SE Houston ditch

HOUSTON - A man was arrested early Monday morning after he led police on a high-speed crosstown chase, police said.

Investigators said the chase started near Interstate 10 and Kirkwood Drive around 1 a.m.

They said they spotted a man sleeping behind the wheel and approached him.

Police said they woke the driver up, he was startled and took off.

Houston TranStar cameras captured the chase headed east on the Katy Freeway and then north on the North Loop with a trail of police officers behind him.

Lt. Larry Crowson said the driver eventually crashed into a ditch near Woody Road and Cleo Street in Brookshire Village in southeast Houston.

"We did some research on the plate during the pursuit and determined the vehicle had been reported stolen during the day," Crowson said.

Police said do not know why the driver was sleeping.

They said he did not appear to be under the influence.
