HPD: Man shot in Craigslist deal gone bad

The buyer allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the seller when he wouldn't give hiim the phone

HOUSTON - A man has been shot in a Craiglist deal gone bad in southwest Houston, police say.

People inside a Starbucks on the Southwest Freeway at Murphy and Wilcrest say two men were outside the front door when the glass shook.

"Felt a huge slam against the window.  There was a gentleman fighting off a suspect with a silver pistol that the cops said was a .40 caliber.  As the victim was pulling the gun away, the suspect shot him in the leg, dropped the gun, took a couple of steps back from the victim, ran back to grab his firearm," said witness Roland Barber.

He and Chris Kelley were inside the Starbucks. They say the victim came here to meet what he believed to be a buyer for his cell phone that was listed on Craigslist.org.

"Commenced to tugging and pulling at the phone and he was trying to get it back.  That's when the guy pulled the gun and shot him in front of the door as they were wrestling it," said Kelley.

They say the man was shot in the upper leg.  Barber said he applied pressure until paramedics arrived and rushed him to Southwest Memorial Hermann Hospital.

"It was horrific.  It doesn't get any worse than that.  Over a $30 phone!  That's just, wow," said Kelley.

The alleged shooter fled the scene.

This is not the first time we've heard about an online deal that went bad.  In April, police say a man was shot when he met what he believed were buyers for his pickup.  Instead, they pulled a gun, shot the owner and took off with his truck.
