HOUSTON - A woman was shot in the head and her co-worker was grazed by a bullet during a Tuesday night attack in southwest Houston, police said.

Investigators said the pair was just leaving the Adair Kitchen in the 5100 block of San Felipe around 11:30 p.m. when they were approached in the parking lot.

The co-workers were right next to their vehicles when assailants shot them, according to homicide detectives.

Officials said 31-year-old Estela Renteria was shot in the head and 20-year-old Jose Isabel Amador-Vasquez was grazed by a bullet. Amador-Vasquez was able to call police for help.

Detectives said the men with the gun ran from the scene and were gone before police arrived.

Police said the victims were rushed to Ben Taub General Hospital. Renteria was in critical condition and Amador-Vasquez was in stable condition. Both are expected to survive.

Homicide detectives were at the hospital interviewing him over night.

Police said the victims were likely targeted by robbers who got away with a small amount of cash and a cell phone.

Adair Kitchen is a popular breakfast, lunch and dinner spot in the Tanglewood subdivision. Customers say they are in shock.

"I absolutely cannot believe this," said customer Megan Hotze. "I come here on weekly basis. It's tragic and so sad to hear about that."

But other patrons weren't surprised. Kelly Gunnison has lived in the neighborhood for almost a decade.

" I think in a big city crime is everywhere and I think if you're looking to steal something you maybe go to one of the nicer neighborhoods," said Gunnison.

There were security cameras trained on the parking lot with it happened, but so far police haven't said if they recorded anything that can be used as evidence.

Police also haven't released descriptions of the two men they're searching for.
