High school senior killed in NW Houston crash

HOUSTON – A high school senior died in a crash in northwest Houston early Thursday morning.

Houston police said Kyle Eickenhorst, an 18-year-old Waltrip High School student, had just left work at a restaurant and pulled up next to a co-worker at a red light on 43rd Street near De Milo Drive about 2 a.m. The co-worker said the teen sped away from the intersection when the light turned green.

The co-worker said Eickenhorst was going too fast for him to keep up.

Seconds later, the co-worker said he saw smoke, debris, and Eickenhorst's Mazda 626 wrapped around a tree.

"Like a tornado sound ... you could hear the vehicle when it went airborne and then the crash of hitting the tree," said John Harvey, who lives near the crash site.

The co-worker tried to give Eickenhorst CPR, but could not save him, investigators said.

Police said there is no evidence the teen was drinking. Investigators suspect he was just going too fast.
