Firefighters battle massive house fire in SE Houston

Officials said the fire started at the one-story house

HOUSTON - Houston firefighters had a difficult time battling a huge house fire in southeast Houston Friday afternoon.

Officials said the fire started around noon at a home in the 5400 block of Woodlark near Woodbrine.

The man who lives alone was able to escape with his two dogs, but his home was ravaged by the blaze.

Fighting the flames was difficult physically and emotionally for the Houston firefighters. Their engines were still covered with black tape -- a sign of morning the four firefighters who died in a five-alarm fire at a hotel in southwest Houston exactly one week ago. The funerals for two of the fallen were being held Friday.

And, the extreme heat and humidity also took a toll on them.

The homeowner said he was grateful his dogs were saved, but is devastated that he lost his prized possessions, including baseball cards that he bought and hoped to sell one day for a huge profit. He told Local 2 that he never had them appraised.

No word yet on a cause of the blaze.
