HOUSTON - A running chainsaw fell on a firefighter battling a blaze in northeast Houston, seriously wounding him.

The accident happened around 11:30 p.m. Friday at a house on Onslow Street, when HFD responded to a fire there.  In an effort to ventilate the house and help put out the blaze, one of the firefighters climbed onto the roof with a chainsaw to cut a hole.

According to HFD, while that firefighter was cutting the hole, he lost his footing and fell backwards off the roof.  The chainsaw he was holding landed on top of him, cutting a portion of his ear off.

He was rushed to the hospital in serious condition.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and no other injuries were reported.

The name of the firefighter was not released.
