1 dead in officer-involved shooting

Lockdown lifted at 2 Aldine ISD schools

HOUSTON - One person is dead and two others are on the run following a shooting in north Harris County involving an off-duty Houston police officer.

It happened at around 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the 500 block of West Road near the North Freeway.

Deputy T. Gilliland with the Harris County Sheriff's Office says the off-duty officer was awakened to the sound of broken glass. He confronted three burglary suspects inside his town home and shot at one of them.

Deputies Houston Police patrolman, S.J. Fluitt, a six year veteran of the department, chased the suspect outside when one of the suspects pulled out a gun and pointed it at the officer.

According to the sheriff's office, the officer, fearing for his life, fired his duty gun multiple times and hit the armed suspect.

That suspect was apprehended by the officer until deputies arrived and helped take him into custody.

The suspect was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies say it was unclear how many shots fired by the officer hit the armed suspect, or whether the suspect was hit inside or outside the town home.

The two other suspects got away from deputies. Authorities set up a perimeter as they search for them.

There was no description of the two at-large suspects immediately available. Anyone with information about the burglars should call 911.

While police searched for the suspects, Aldine ISD placed two schools under lockdown. Those schools are Gray Elementary and Stehlik Intermediate. The lockdowns were lifted at 11:09 a.m., according to Gilliland.

Officials believe a pair of shoes and a handgun were dropped at the scene.

The sheriff's office says the off-duty officer was not injured in this incident.

Thursday evening, neither the Harris County Medical Examiner nor the Harris County Sheriffs Office was ready to officially release the dead suspect's identity.
