Debris removal process not going fast enough, Abbott says

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Thursday that more should be done to speed up the process of removing debris from neighborhoods ravaged by Hurricane Harvey.

Abbott said there are about 200 million cubic yards of debris in the state that need to be moved to landfills.

“We urge our local officials to be swiftly and heavily engaged,” Abbott said. “It is going fast, but, candidly, not fast enough.”

Abbott said there are 130 debris removal sites that are open across the state.

About $91 million has been given to Houston to help with the removal process, while Harris County received about $44 million, Abbott said.
