Texans' Brian Cushing surprises 2 teachers with Stars of Classroom honor

HOUSTON – It was an emotional surprise for two teachers at Ridgecrest Elementary School Tuesday morning.

Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing presented teachers Lorenza Garay and Danielle Potts with The Stars in the Classroom honor.

The Stars in the Classroom program, by First Community Credit Union, honors 10 teachers each year in Houston who make a difference at their schools.

"It's obviously their passion and for students to be that in tune with just writing in and letting us know that this means that much to them. It's a big deal," Cushing said.

During the visit, Cushing gave the teachers game tickets, sideline passes, parking, a custom game ball and a $500 donation to their school district.

The students who nominated them also got an autographed Cushing football.

While the rest of the student body had Cushing on their turf, they got in questions unmatched by any sideline reporters.

"Some of the questions were just straight up and very forward, but that's the honesty of kids. You never know what they're going to ask," Cushing said.

Some of the questions these inquisitive minds asked:

  • Are you really a football player?
  • What team do you play for?
  • What team do you really want to play for?

This year, Stars in the Classroom said they received around 400 nominations.
