Teen killed in drive-by shooting in southeast Houston

HOUSTON – A 17-year-old boy was killed Thursday in a drive-by shooting in southeast Houston, police said.

According to police, the boy, who family identified as James Smith, was with friends just before midnight in the 5000 block of North Ridge near Jutland when someone in a dark-colored car drove by and shot at the group.

The teen was shot in the chest, police said. He was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he died during surgery.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation.

Police are questioning witnesses and reviewing video for a description of the car and possibly the gunman.
