Teen survives night in ocean off Georgia coast

Vacationer was swept to sea by rip tide

A 19-year-old spent nearly 10 hours in the ocean fighting for his life off the coast of Georgia after he was caught in a rip tide.

Blake Spataro told Action News Jax he was sitting by the shore when a rip tide washed him into the ocean off St. Simons Island.

He said he screamed for help, but no one could hear him as he continued to get swept out to sea.

“I didn’t want to die out there. I was talking to God the entire night,” he said.

The U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies spent the night searching for him as he tried making his way back to shore. He eventually came across a golf course where he was able to get close enough to walk to shore.
