HOUSTON - A normally quiet, established neighborhood in southwest Houston was filled with police cars, lights and the sound of gunfire after a burglary on the 3500 block of N. Braeswood near Buffalo Speedway.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday evening as families were settling in for dinner and other evening activities.

"It's frightening because you don't know what's happening in your neighborhood," said Kimberly Goode, who lives next door to the home that was burglarized and was at home at the time. "The families are very close around here."

Police said the elderly homeowner was inside when the suspect broke in. He heard the burglar and called a relative, and that relative called 911.

Neighbors told Local 2 they had spotted the suspect in the neighborhood before the burglary.

"I understand that he knocked on three other houses and mentioned that his dog was missing and that he needed help finding his dog," said Goode.

When the officer arrived, the homeowner did not realize the burglar was still there. The suspect ran into the living room and charged the Houston police sergeant. After failing to comply with his verbal commands, the officer fired once at the suspect and missed.

The suspect, identified by police on Wednesday as 30-year-old Jonathan Michael Jones was stopped and arrested.

A detective confirmed Jones had gone to several houses and knocked on doors telling people he was looking for his dog.

According to the detective, Jones had warrants out for his arrest and a prior record.

"I'm pleased to see the response of HPD," said Goode. "Very quick, very fast, and very thorough with the investigation. I'm glad to see that they've been caught."

Jones has been been charged with burglary of a habitation.

The Houston police officer who fired his weapon is a 17-year veteran with the department and is assigned to the Southwest Patrol Division.
