Students to be tested for tuberculosis at El Campo High School

EL CAMPO, Texas – Letters went home to parents last week informing them of an El Campo High School student with a possible case of tuberculosis.

Now, state health officials are getting involved.

Several students have been identified who may have come in close, prolonged contact with their possibly infected classmate at the school.

Starting Thursday and on Friday as well screening will be done on campus.

A letter was sent to KPRC from a parent of one student who needs to be tested.

It explains that even students who didn't come in contact with the possibly infected student can be screened for tuberculosis if they want.

The principal explained:

"This is a new process for all of us involved here at the school; at the end of it, our goal is to have everyone screened that needs to be screened as well as anyone who wants to be screened. I thank you for your patience and cooperation and will get back to you with more information as we get it."

Tuberculosis is a bacterial disease in the lungs that can spread through coughing.

It can usually be prevented and treated with proper medication.
