'Stros rewind: A look back at Astros' 3-1 series victory over Red Sox in 2017 ALDS

HOUSTON – The Boston Red Sox were the first speed bump for the Astros in the 2017 playoffs.

Houston beat Boston 3-1 in the American League Division Series last season and celebrated the series win on the field at Fenway Park and in the locker room at the storied stadium in Beantown.

We all know that was last year and the two teams are completely different this season, but we also know what they say about history.

Here's a look back at the 2017 ALDS:

Game 1 - Oct. 5, 2017

Houston won Game 1 of the series 8-2 at Minute Maid Park after an exceptional performance by Justin Verlander and an even more exceptional performance by Jose Altuve.

Verlander spun six innings of two-run ball while striking out three and throwing 99 pitches. He passed the ball to Chris Devenski, Will Harris, Francisco Liriano and Jose Musgrove to complete the win. The bullpen allowed two hits in the final three innings of the game without walking a batter.

Altuve and the Astros' offense, however, stole the show in this one. Altuve homered three times, including two off Red Sox starter Chris Sale. Alex Bregman also homered off Sale. Altuve and Bregman hit back-to-back homers in the first inning, setting the tone for the offensive outburst.

Houston took the 1-0 series lead.

Game 2 - Oct. 6, 2017

Riding high on the Game 1 victory, Houston arrived at Minute Maid Park for the second consecutive game ready to swing the bats. The 'Stros scored four runs in the first two innings off Red Sox starter Drew Pomeranz and tacked on four more in the sixth inning off a pair of Boston relievers.

Dallas Keuchel threw 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball and Devenski, Luke Gregerson and Ken Giles finished off the Sox in the second straight 8-2 victory.

Carlos Correa homered in the first inning and George Springer hit his first 2017 postseason homer in the third inning before Boston pulled Pomeranz. Correa also tacked on a double and knocked in four in the game.

Houston held a 2-0 series lead heading to Boston for Game 3.

Game 3 - Oct. 8, 2017

After jumping on Red Sox starter Doug Fister for three runs in the first inning of Game 3, it looked as if the 'Stros would sweep the Sox, but Boston's bats came alive and scored 10 unanswered runs in order to stay alive in the series.

Five of Houston's six pitchers were scored on in Boston's 10-3 win.

Brad Peacock started the game and lasted just 2 2/3 innings while allowing three runs. Liriano, Lance McCullers Jr., Devenski and Musgrove all allowed at least one run. Gregerson pitched a clean eighth inning.

Correa homered in his second consecutive game and Josh Reddick chipped in an RBI single in the opening frame.

Houston held a 2-1 series lead heading to Game 4.

Game 4 - Oct. 9, 2017

Rick Porcello started against Charlie Morton in Game 4, but Verlander and Sale would each come in during the middle innings, with Verlander earning the series-clinching victory, his second win of the series.

The Astros jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first two innings and carried that lead up until the fifth, when Boston struck for a pair of runs to take a 3-2 lead.

Bregman greeted Sale with a leadoff homer in the eighth inning to tie the game. Josh Reddick provided the clutch hit later in the inning after Craig Kimbrel replaced Sale. Reddick delivered a two-out single that scored Cameron Maybin to give Houston a 4-3 lead.

Carlos Beltran tacked on an RBI double in the top of the ninth inning to give Houston the cushion it needed to pull off the 5-4 win.

Altuve finished the ALDS with a .533 batting average in the four games. Gurriel had a .529 average and Springer had a .412 average.

Houston won the ALDS 3-1.
