Channelview standoff ends peacefully after nearly 4 hours

CHANNELVIEW, Texas – A standoff in Channelview on Tuesday, which prompted heightened security at several nearby schools, ended peacefully after nearly four hours.

Harris County deputies said the standoff with a man who was holed up in an apartment at 975 Sheldon Road began about 8:30 a.m.

Sky 2 video showed a large law enforcement presence at a strip mall behind the apartments and SWAT officers taking cover behind vehicles across from the apartments. A large group of deputies could also be seen assembled near the apartment building.

Authorities said tear gas was used by SWAT officers before the standoff ended.

A spokeswoman for the Channelview Independent School District said Channelview High School, Kolarik 9th Grade Campus, Joe Frank Campbell Learning Center and Early Childhood Center were placed in lockout mode. A lockout means that all students and adults must remain indoors until the all-clear is given.
