Spring training travel guide for Astros fans

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Friday afternoon marked another one for the history books, the Astros played their first game of spring training as the reigning World Series Champions.

The ‘Stros beat the Washington Nationals 3-2 in the exhibition game, the first of a month long series of games in the Sunshine State.

The Astros travel packages flew like hotcakes, but there are still many tickets left for people who want to spend spring break in West Palm Beach.

“I’m very excited, I want to see Altuve. Altuve is my favorite player, I’m excited,” said Patricia Cheesman as she chuckled.

She and her husband, Robert, planned to go spring training last month and will drive to Florida, watch the Astros and go to Disney World.

“Go ahead and do it now, go ahead and get your rooms booked because the rooms will go up since the Astros are there with the World Series champions,” said Cheesman. “The rooms will go up, you need to get your tickets and go."

WHERE IS SPRING TRAINING?

This year, the Astros spring training will be at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches.

If you and your family are planning to drive from Houston, it will take a little more than 16 hours.

Flying will take less than three hours, but will be more pricey. Fort Lauderdale airport is about an hour away from The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches compared to West Palm Beach Airport which is a 20-minute drive.

HOW MUCH ARE TICKETS TO SPRING TRAINING?

They range from $13 to $65 depending on what’s available and where fans want to sit.

WHERE TO STAY IN WEST PALM BEACH?

As it gets closer to spring break, it’s a given hotel prices will start to increase in the coming weeks.

Near the Ballpark of the Palm Beaches are hotels that range from 3+ star properties.

Interstate 95 runs north-south right through West Palm Beach area and the ballpark sits about 2 miles to the West of I-95 off of Haverhill Road. Other hotel options can be found just a couple of exits north on I-95 in nearby Jupiter near the PGA Boulevard area where you will also find good restaurant and shopping choices. That area is about 15 to 20 minutes from the ballpark.

WHAT TO BRING?

Of course, stock up on Astros gear and bring your favorite ball, poster and or shirt you may want a player to sign. Have a Sharpie on hand and ready to go.

According to The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, fans can get autographs from players along the railing between sections 100-102 and 116-123.

Players will not sign autographs during games, according to the ball park.

It’s important to also bring sunscreen, since it’s very sunny and can get hot at times. (It’s not called the Sunshine State for no reason.)

Fans are only allowed soft-sided bags and containers that are 16-by-16-by-8 inches or smaller inside the ball park, according to their website.

WHAT YOU CAN’T BRING

Even though it’s going to be warm, leave the umbrellas behind, along with the hard coolers, ice chests, banners and signs.
