Southbound lanes of Gulf Freeway at Fuqua reopen after person hit, killed

All southbound lanes of I-45 Gulf Freeway at Fuqua Street have reopened after a deadly pedestrian accident, authorities said.

Police said a man in his 20s was seen jumping off the Fuqua overpass into the southbound lanes of the freeway, where he was struck by a vehicle.

HPD Vehicular Crimes division Sgt. Hall said an off-duty officer saw the man jump from the freeway in what they believe was a suicide attempt, but it is unclear if the man died from the fall or was killed by the vehicle that hit him.

The driver of the car that hit the man did not stay at the scene.

All freeway reopened at 9:04 a.m.

Anyone with information on the vehicle or the driver is asked to contact the HPD Hit and Run Unit or Crime Stoppers.
