Sneaker snatchers break through walls to steal shoes

Thieves leave boxes behind, wipe out inventory

HOUSTON - Thieves entered a vacant Title Max store early Monday morning, then broke through the walls of the store to get to what they really wanted – expensive athletic shoes.

Houston police said that the sneaker snatchers broke Sheetrock walls to get into the storage room of City Gear Shoes on Westheimer Road near Briar West, where they emptied out the store's entire inventory, taking the shoes and leaving hundreds of boxes behind. The incident happened around 6 a.m. Monday.

"They just took the shoes out and put them into trash bags," said Jason Herbert, an electrician working at the store.

Herbert showed Local 2 holes left in the walls from the brazen robbery.

"Shoes are expensive, people want them," he said.

Investigators said when police arrived on the scene, the burglars took off. One man, however, was taken into police custody, but he has not been named a suspect.
