Slain grandmother's relatives say they found evidence in killing

Norma Jean Scott found dead in Fifth Ward

HOUSTON – A family returned to the scene of where a missing grandmother's body was found and found evidence they said police missed.

The Houston Police Department said that members of Texas EquuSearch found Norma Jean Scott's nude body shortly after 6 p.m. Monday in some bushes on Bay Street, which is about two blocks from Scott's home.

"We all miss my mother very much," said Scott's daughter, Bridget. "She would call each one of us every day to see how we were doing. We were so close to her. It will be strange not to hear her voice again."

Scott, 48, was last seen alive on Thursday afternoon. The mother of six and grandmother of 18 reportedly left her home with another person and was described as very frightened.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences confirmed late Tuesday that the body was Scott's. The cause of her death has not yet been determined.

Relatives said that on Wednesday they returned to the scene where Scott's body was found. While there, they said they found a bag that contained Scott's bloodied clothes and purse. Houston police returned to the scene to investigate.

"During the search of the field on Monday, no other items were located," an HPD representative wrote in a statement. "Those articles the family says it discovered today have been taken into our custody and will be examined thoroughly."

Police said a person of interest is being held on unrelated charges. Detectives have not released any information about that person.

"My mother was a loving woman," Robert Scott said. "She didn't have enemies. She couldn't count them on one hand because she didn't have any."

Relatives said they're trying to find money to pay for Scott's funeral and give her a proper burial.

Anyone with information regarding Scott's death is asked to call the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
