ARLINGTON, Texas – Six Flags Over Texas will no longer fly the six flags that once flew over the Lone Star State, and will instead fly six U.S. flags.
The flags of Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the United States of America and the Confederate States of America have flown over the entrance to the theme park since its 1961 opening. The display represented the six nations that have at one point governed Texas.

Officials said in a statement Friday that only U.S. flags will now be featured.
The full statement read:
"At Six Flags Over Texas, we strive every single day to make people happy and to create a fun, thrilling and safe family friendly experience for our guests. We always choose to focus on celebrating the things that unite us versus those that divide us. As such, we have changed the flag displays in our park to feature American flags."
The 212-acre theme park opened Aug. 5, 1961.
