SHSU basketball player receives backlash after apparent 'blackface' video surfaces online

HOUSTON – A Sam Houston State University women's basketball player is facing backlash after a video surfaced of her wearing blackface on Twitter Monday night.

A student who saw the video on Snapchat posted it on Twitter which, caused an uproar.

SHSU students quickly identified the student as Jennifer Oramas. Students filed complaints with the university's administration and athletics department.

SHSU athletics released the following statement regarding the video on Twitter:

"#SHSU Athletic Director, Bobby Williams, on social media responsibility: “Our program fosters an inclusive environment encouraging respect of diverse backgrounds & ideas. We uphold these core values despite any insensitivity and poor judgement on social media by an individual.”

The university's president, Dana G. Hoyt, released the following statement:

"We expect certain behavior from our #SHSU students and greater community that is consistent with our values. It's disappointing when one of our own falls short but it serves as a learning opportunity for us all. This situation is under disciplinary review by the Athletics Dept."
