Shop Small Business Saturday in Houston

HOUSTON – In an effort to support small businesses across the country, Small Business Saturday began on the day after Black Friday in 2010.

They have declared the Saturday after Thanksgiving as Small Business Saturday.

"Small Business Saturday is the day we celebrate the Shop Small movement to drive shoppers to local merchants across the U.S.," a mission statement reads on a Facebook page dedicated to supporting small businesses across the nation.

According to a Yelp-commissioned survey, Houston ranks 12th in the country as far as local shopping goes.

The survey also showed that 64 percent of Americans are likely to shop at local, independent businesses this holiday season. The shoppers plan to spend an average of $324 each, up from $258 last year.

Over half of Americans, 53 percent, will have already started or plan to start holiday shopping by Small Business Saturday, according to the survey.
