Several HISD high school students injured in bus crash

HOUSTON – Several HISD high school students were injured in a bus crash Tuesday morning, the district said.

The accident happened just before 8 a.m. in the 7800 block of Lawn Street in southeast Houston. Investigators are trying to figure out who is at fault in this crash, which sent eight people to the hospital.

The bus was transporting kids to Reagan High School when HISD police say the bus collided with a Chevy Suburban at the intersection of Lawn at Fair.

Officers say that collision caused several students to fall out of their seats. Five students were transported to the hospital.

Neighbors say they heard the crash and ran outside.

"We heard a loud skeeer and then boom, we were coming up this street, and we heard it and we saw a whole bunch of police and we walked down the street to see what's up," said Daishon Babino.

The woman and her two children in the Suburban were also transported to the hospital.

HISD police will be reviewing surveillance video from the school bus to see who is at fault and if either party ran the stop sign.

"At night you hear people speeding up here, too. They speed up here at school time, too," Tranesha Batts said.

Neighbors say the crash could have been prevented if this was a four-way stop rather than just a two-way stop.

Other students were picked up by another bus and taken to school.

We're told all of the injuries involved are minor.
