Seniors turn parking spots into works of art at Atascocita High School

HOUSTON – Blue waters, a rising sun, a beautiful sky – how would you like to see this every day you pull into your parking spot?

Seniors at two area high schools are seeing a personalized vision every day. They are getting the chance to paint their own reserved parking space.

“You can express yourself and I’m really into painting so it’s just something that appealed to me,” Kelsie Andrews said.

Senior year is all about friends and finding your passion. So, being able to paint her own parking spot is perfect for Andrews, a senior at Atascocita High School.

“I’m going to paint sunflowers and then I’m going to put a Bible verse right here,” Andrews said.

Two years ago, Summer Creek High School was the first Humble ISD school to do it. Then last year’s senior class at Atascocita went to their administrators.

“They thought it was a really cool idea and something that they wanted to start and so we went forward with it,” said Scott Peden, vice principal.

What’s more, they turned it into a fundraiser.

“We’re selling 200 parking spots, and all the funds raised go back to our senior class to help lower prices for the prom, the picnic tickets ... and this year we’re going to use some of the funds to lower some AP exam costs,” Peden said.

“It made me excited to be a senior 'cause I wanted to paint one. I was kind of jealous as a junior that I didn’t get to have one,” Sydney Pierce said.

While Andrews is just getting started, Pierce’s spot is ready for the year. She hopes Atascocita keeps the program going and would even like to see it spread to more schools around Houston.

“It’s cool to see everybody’s, like, personalities and creativity come out like they’re all unique in like their own way,” Pierce said.

And it looks like it will.

Peden said he’s already had a conversation with a Fort Bend ISD school administrator and he’s expecting more phone calls in the future.
