WASHINGTON - Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is pledging to donate his salary to charity for the duration of the government shutdown.

On Friday, Cruz said he did not plan to forego his paycheck as a U.S. Senator, but clarified Monday night saying he plans to give that money away.

Cruz also spoke about what he called a lack of compromise on the part of President Obama and the Senate leading up to the shutdown.

"If you look at this process over the last several weeks, the House has been working trying to negotiate a compromise," said Sen. Cruz. "The problem has been Harry Reid and the president have refused to compromise."

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid called the shutdown a "sad day" for the country.
