Sen. Cornyn not worried about effect of Donald Trump's comments

HOUSTON – "This is a unique circumstance that I've never seen before,” said U.S. Senator John Cornyn as he talked about the Presidential race after his comments at the Greater Houston Partnership’s “State of the Senate” lunch on Tuesday.

Cornyn has publicaly endorsed Republican Nominee Donald Trump.

"I'm disappointed at the race to the bottom that this presidential campaign has become," Cornyn said.

Trump spent the day in San Antonio and Dallas for private fundraising events.

Republican Cornyn said he stood by his support of Republican Presidential Nominee Trump.

Cornyn said he did not believe that Trump’s presence on the ballot would hurt other Republicans on the ballot in other races if some voters choose not to vote at all.

"Well, I actually don't think people are confused about this, because I think that Mr. Trump is such an unusual and unique candidate that most people don't necessarily attribute that to the Republicans down ballot," he said.

"It was almost like a spear went through my heart. It was a very emotional time for me,” said Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee of Trump’s comments from 2005.

Jackson Lee is a longtime supporter of Democratic Presidential Nominee Hillary Clinton.

She said Trump’s comments could hurt the U.S. around the world.

"It was not sports talk. It was debasing talk against women that is absolutely unacceptable," she said.
