Search volunteers find body in a Fifth Ward neighborhood

Still not clear if body is of missing woman, Norma Jean Scott

HOUSTON - A body has been found in a Fifth Ward neighborhood.

It's not clear if that body belongs to Norma Jean Scott, 48, a woman who has been missing since August 30.

The Houston Police Department confirms that members of Texas Equusearch found the body of an African-American woman Monday shortly after 6 p.m.

They made the discovery just a block from Scott's home.

"My mother is not like that. If she's going to leave the house, she's going to be prepared. She's going to take her purse with her and her cell phone," said Robert Scott.

Family members say Scott was last seen Thursday afternoon. The mother of six and grandmother of 18 reportedly left her home with another person and was described as very frightened.

Texas Equusearch was asked to participate in the search by HPD.

"I told them I want you to start moving in to the area over by her house," said Equusearch volunteer Frank Black.

Teams searched by foot and with ATVs.

"They discovered, in an overgrown vacant lot, an adult female. She is naked," said HPD officer J.C. Padilla. "They secured the scene. They contacted our patrol officers. Patrol officers immediately responded to the scene and contacted us."

It was an ATV team that found the body.
